Passion for Film
Varun Mahatme's Camera
What is your item? My camera and shoulder rig. I have a passion for film making, one that has stuck with me for a very long time. It began when I was younger. My friends and I would make videos of us playing and commenting on Minecraft and then post them on YouTube. Now I'm really fascinated by Documentary Films.
Most importantly, how they can capture and convey someone's emotions. After college I plan to study documentary filmmaking at university.
When you hold this item what do you feel? Like it’s my baby! Even though I am only seventeen years old and haven’t had a baby yet, and probably won’t for a very long time, this is what I imagine it would feel like. I’m very familiar with it too, I know all the settings like the back of my hand. I can just grab it and start filming.
Why is this item important to you? This is my first camera and it’s been everywhere with me. I was diagnosed with oestesarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer, when I was eleven years old and this camera was always by my side during all my treatments. From London’s UCLH, where I had my Chemotherapy, to Florida in America where I was fortunate enough to receive life-changing Proton Therapy.
Seven years on, thankfully I am well, and this camera continues to travel everywhere with me. I sometimes wonder if I should upgrade it, but it does everything I want it to do perfectly.
If it were destroyed, I'd be speechless. I wouldn’t know what to do. Whenever I see something that is interesting, be it happy, sad or dangerous even - my first thought is “where’s my camera, I want to video that”. I’d feel defeated if I couldn’t film what’s happening around me.
